Sumerduck Dragway

Race track number 61 for the Shooting Star race team.

Crew for this race: Bill, Kimberley, Jagger, Matthew and Eric.

After a long day at Elk Creek, the team packed up and headed for Culpeper, VA to Sumerduck Dragway, for the second race of the weekend. The scenery and mountain views were breath taking. With only a few hours of sleep, we arrived at the track around 11:30 in the morning, Tired, but ready for an exciting day of racing. We parked next to our long time friends and fellow racers, Bunny and the Boy's.

It was a miserably hot and humid day, but we all got right to work. First on the agenda was to see if everyone made it to the track. Charlie Gambino was like a kid at Christmas time. His new funny car"Total Insanity" had just been delivered to the track. It is a beautiful piece of machinery. We all look forward to competing with Charlie' and his "Total Insanity". It is always an experience to run with Charlie no matter what he is driving. If there was an award for the person who made sure he enjoyed life and had the most fun, it would be Charlie Gambino. (AKA the track prankster)! All other racers were present and accounted for. We looked forward to an exciting day of racing and got back to our pits to work on the race car.

First round we were matched up against the incredibly talented racer and long time friend, bunny burkett. Both teams started off with long, eye watering, smoky burnouts, bringing the crowd to their feet screaming with anticipation. Once Jagger and kimberley got bill back to pre-stage the rev's went up and the race was on. Miss bunny left first with bill right on her heels. Bill's 60 foot time was 1.046 to miss bunny's 1.066. Having not ever run at this track bill went a little easy on the run to get familiar with the track conditions and shut down area. Although bunny beat him fair and square, bunny had a lightening fast run of 4.19 @ 169 mph to bill's 4.43 @ 147 mph, placing him 5th on the ladder. At the top end bill ran into a little trouble. Thankfully bunny was able to give Bill enough room to work with, to avoid what had the potential to be a disastrous situation. The event clearly shook both drivers up. They recovered quickly and we all headed back to the pits to prepare for round two. Bunny would later shatter the track record with a blistering run of 4.06 @182 mph.

Round two the shooting star was matched up against the eventual winner of the race,Gary watters. Unfortunately bill had to abort this run due to an oil leak after the burnout. Not to be deterred the team switched into high gear and repaired the leak in time to get at the end of the pack and make a run. The shooting star was then matched against matt stambaugh. Bill did a crowd pleasing burnout and then staged the car. Matt may have got off the line first, but bill thundered down the track taking the win light with a 4.44 pass @ 139 mph, putting him in 3rd place for today's race. Bill severely burned up the clutch with this pass, as evidenced by the pile of clutch dust in his lap at the completion of the pass. The team packed up and headed on down the highway to arrive home at a bright and early 5:30 am.

Back to the shop to work on the car and body for our race in dothan Alabama on June 19th. We hope to see you all there!
