Back in '95 when I decided that I wanted to attempt drag racing, I found this Monte and picked it up for a mere $1,200. The track closest to me was the Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna, WI which was a one hour and 20 minute drive south for me. I was only going to race in the Street Eliminator class until the stock 267 motor blew up or I got bored, whichever came first. |
Well, the engine never failed to get me down the track in the high 19-second range during the whole season and I didn't get bored at all, in fact, I got majorly addicted. When my first season ended, I looked up my friend Merle at Auto Haus Engine Builders and sweet talked him into building me an engine that would get me down the track in a little less time. I was able to use his shop to pull out that tired old motor and clean up the engine compartment for the new addition. The next season I ran in the mid 14's. I was a happy camper! Then in '97, my third season, I had the tranny rebuilt and swapped in a rearend with 3.42 gears which put me in the high 13s. At the end of the season I was able to place 15th in points in a field that averaged 60 cars per race. I've since parked that old Monte. Hope to get back into racing again someday when I'm done with car payments on my daily driver! |
