Made a visit to Thorn Hill on Saturday 10/24/09, and took some video & photos to use in a YouTube video as a Thorn Hill Dragway Track Tour. The video contains no on track action, but plenty of shots of the facility.
<object classid="clsid: D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"width="320" height="276" id="myMovieName"> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Si24893nrGE" quality="high" bgcolor="#FFFFFF" width="320" height="276" loop="false" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer">

I am with the St. Louis Auto Racing Association and we are in the beginnings of incorporating the Midwest Motorsports Museum and Hall of Fame. This is the sort of information and history that is getting away from us too often.
We would like information about the Alton Dragway to add to our list of long gone race tracks in the midwest. Also the White Hall Raceway. If anyone wants to contact me with information about these tracks please feel free to email me at wandak1776@att.net. Thanks.
I have a copy of the AJC dating March 3rd 1969. The crash happen the day before. I have been doing some research on the Yellow River Drag Strip. I'm collecting pictures of the cars that raced there and of the accident. I was only 8 years old then, but still remember when it happened. My cousin was there and my older brother was going to go but couldn't make it that day. We lived near Northlake Mall in those days.
In 84 I moved to Cherokee Co. and raced some at Dixie Speedway in the mid 80's. Frank Oglesby, the driver of the cougar in the other lane had a machine shop in Woodstock, I had him do some machine work for me back then, small world. Last I heard, He was driving those jet cars for Roger Gustin.
That accident changed all forms of racing, it required all the tracks to have enough insurance to cover a disaster like that. The insurance companies then required guard rails and heavy fencing to protect the spectators. After March 2nd 1969 alot of the smaller tracks closed down because the new requirements.

I remember 'pure stock' drag racing at "Strato Rods", Ft.Dix/McGuire, in 1971-1972. It was a total concrete strip surface then, and I recall a few cars having too much bite and breaking.
It was always very hot at that track, as I recall.
I remember a candy red Camaro named the "Jersey Twister", which was the quickest car at any event there I remember.
Personally, I remember racing my dark green 1970 Chevrolet Impala coupe against a then current yellow Camaro, with another young fellow at its wheel. I don't recall his ever besting me for the class trophy, but it was always a very close race. A battle of 350 C.I. V-8 engines, with automatic transmissions.
I think I won, perhaps, a half dozen trophies, which I still value to this day.
When did the racing end ?
Dan in Indiana

My name is Rick David, my grandfather was WH David. He opened and ran Pel State, Hammond, Lake Charles, Houma and State Capitol through out the '50s and '60s. I am collecting pictures, videos and memorabilia from Louisiana tracks from the '50s and '60s, this would include LaPlace. I am going to be setting up a website dedicated to the history of drag racing in Louisiana and would like to start a museum some time in the future. I already have the original christmas tree, the 1950s NHRA banner from Pel State, pit passes, pictures, videos, 8mm videos, newspaper articles, etc. All items donated are guaranteed to be preserved indefinitely

My grandmother, Jayne David, was the writer and editor Tire Marks published in the '50s and '60s. I am collecting all issues and will have a link to them on the website.

Also, I am trying to locate the announcers stand (blue panel truck) from Pel State. It was restored in the '80s by a Louisiana racing club, picture attached. I have been told in may in North Louisiana. If you have any information, please let me know.

In the early '80s there was a Louisiana drag racing hall of fame located at a track in Eunice, LA. The track is now closed. I am trying to get any information on the plaques and memorabilia removed at closing.

Any pictures or video that have already been scanned can be emailed directly to me. Any other memorabilia can be mailed to the address below. Please label anything sent with dates, locations, names, etc. if possible. Credit for any donations will be recorded and noted.

Thanks,
Rick David
rdavid88@cox.net
225-413-2191

9514 Cabernet Dr.
Baton Rouge, LA 70817
