Notice How Dark the mold gets as you build thickness.
On to the doors. Aluminum blanks were cut, doors thickened for electric motors and elliminating the work required to smooth the doors. Clay used to space the aluminum and round edges. Parting lines were decided on.
The Clay area for parting lines is removed after each section is sprayed, sets enough to lay up on and 2 layers of vail, and 3 layers of 1 1/2 oz chop strand mat are applied. The process can take from several hours to several days so alot enough time to finish the job without having to go back and sand the glass to get adhesion. Before seperating the flanges drill and bolt together. Then remove bolts, part flanges being careful not to chip the mold, and remove origonal part. I use plastic wedges purchased from the supplier. They are cheap.
When part is removed reassemble and check the mold. If you have to remove any areas of the mold now is the time. Take apart again, sand with 2000 grit wet or dry and warm soapy water. You may go through 5 or 6 sheets but get it smooth. This is the base for the finish luster of the mold. Once sanded, rinse and polish as if polishing a urathane paint job. Clean mold with warm clean water between compounds and dry. When high luster is acheived wax it up!
Make sure you can spray all areas of the mold with gel coat before starting the sanding, waxing & polishing stage.
When the mold is prepaired right the part is trimed after jell when setting, getting stiff, and still warm. The part releases with little or no effort. Wedges are used on flanges, not part removal.
Finished Parts come out quite nice.It won't Be Long Now till there is a body!
